Is bathroom mold dangerous or can I clean it myself?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold growing in our bathroom. It's mostly in the grout between the tiles in the shower area of our master bathroom, and it's been getting worse since the weather got more humid a couple of months ago. I'm worried about their health but also don't want to call a professional if it's something I can easily fix myself with a good cleaner from Ace Hardware. Is this black mold in the shower grout a serious health risk that requires professional remediation, or can I safely tackle it on my own?

Bathroom mold in grout is common here due to Dubai's high humidity and condensation from showers. For most healthy individuals, this surface mold is an irritant, not an acute toxin. It can cause the coughing and congestion you're noticing, especially in children who are more sensitive.

You can safely clean it yourself if the area is small (less than one square meter) and confined to non-porous surfaces like tile grout. Use a dedicated mold cleaner from a hardware store or a solution of one part bleach to four parts water. Scrub thoroughly, ensure excellent ventilation during cleaning, and fix the source of moisture by using your exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower.

However, if the mold returns quickly after a thorough cleaning, that indicates a persistent moisture problem behind the tiles. If anyone in the household has pre-existing respiratory conditions, asthma, or compromised immunity, the irritation risk is higher. In those cases, or if the mold has spread to drywall or ceiling materials, a professional inspection is wise to assess for hidden growth and identify the root cause. They can perform air quality tests to determine the exact spore count and species, which is the only way to confirm if it's a more problematic type like Stachybotrys.
