How to properly remove mold from bedroom wall in Jumeirah?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. It's been really humid lately and I'm worried it's mold. What's the best way to get rid of this properly without ruining the paint?

The black spots behind your wardrobe are almost certainly mold, a very common issue in Jumeirah due to our high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. The wall behind furniture is a prime spot because air circulation is poor, allowing moisture to accumulate.
For a small area (under one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. First, move the wardrobe away from the wall to allow the area to dry completely. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Do not just wipe it, as this can spread spores. Instead, lightly mist the area with a 3:1 water-to-white vinegar solution to dampen the mold and prevent spores from becoming airborne, then scrub with a stiff brush. After scrubbing, wipe the area clean with a damp cloth and dry it thoroughly with a fan. Repainting is necessary to seal the surface; use a mold-inhibiting primer before applying your top coat. However, if the affected area is larger, has penetrated deep into the drywall, or if you smell a persistent musty odor, this indicates a more serious problem. In these cases, professional inspection and remediation are strongly recommended to identify and address the underlying moisture source and ensure complete removal. Improper DIY methods can often spread the contamination to other areas of the home. A proper remediation will include containment of the area, HEPA filtration, and verification that the space is clean and safe through post-remediation testing. |
