Should I worry about mold behind my sofa?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be mold. I just pulled back the sofa in our living room and found a bunch of black spots along the base of the wall where we usually have the AC vent blowing. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this now after the recent humidity. What's the best way to get a proper mold inspection done here, and should I be worried about the health effects for my family?

The black spots behind your sofa are a significant concern, especially with your children's symptoms. In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue. The AC vent blowing cold air directly onto that wall creates a constant cold spot. When humid room air hits it, condensation forms inside the wall cavity, providing the perfect damp environment for mold to grow hidden from view.

For your family's health, you should be concerned. Prolonged exposure to certain mold types can cause respiratory irritation, persistent coughing, and worsened allergies, particularly in children. The fact that you've discovered a hidden colony and are experiencing symptoms means professional assessment is the necessary next step.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself, as disturbing it can release a large number of spores into your living area. A proper inspection involves more than a visual check; it requires a moisture meter to find the dampness source and often air or surface sampling to identify the mold species. This lab analysis is critical to understand the health risk and plan the correct remediation. In Dubai, look for a DHA-approved indoor health company that conducts this kind of diagnostic testing. They can determine if the issue is superficial or if it has penetrated deeper into the building materials, which dictates the remediation approach.
