How to remove black mold and get inspection in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black spots I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, probably from the AC condensation. What's the best way to get rid of this properly and who should I call for a reliable inspection in Dubai?

Black spots behind furniture, especially near AC units, are a common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity and constant AC use creating condensation. For a small area (less than 1 square meter), you can clean it yourself with a solution of one part bleach to four parts water, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. Ensure the room is well-ventilated. However, given that the mold is behind a wardrobe and your children are symptomatic, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the full extent and type of mold present.

Do not disturb the area before testing, as this can release spores. In Dubai, look for a certified indoor environmental professional or a company with its own microbiology lab. They should conduct air and surface sampling to identify the species, as some types like Aspergillus can be more problematic. This lab-based evidence is crucial for determining the proper remediation protocol and verifies the work was done correctly, not just visually clean.

For remediation, the Dubai Municipality has guidelines that reputable companies follow, which include containment of the affected area, use of HEPA filtration air scrubbers, and safe disposal of contaminated materials. The goal is to remove the mold source and fix the underlying moisture issue, which is often poor insulation on the AC condensation line or a drain pan overflow. After remediation, a post-clearance test from the same lab should confirm the spore count has returned to normal indoor levels.
