how to remove black mold and clean ac ducts?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in Jumeirah. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably because the wall faces the outside and it's been so humid lately. What's the best way to treat this myself to stop it from coming back, and should I get the AC ducts cleaned professionally as well?

Black mold behind furniture on an exterior wall in Jumeirah is a classic Dubai issue, often caused by thermal bridging where the cold interior wall meets the humid outdoor air, creating condensation. For a small patch (under one square meter), you can treat it yourself.

First, address the moisture source. Improve ventilation in the room immediately. Move the wardrobe away from the wall and keep it there. Wearing an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection, scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water. Avoid bleach; it only lightens the color but doesn't kill the roots. After cleaning, dry the surface completely with a fan. Then, use a dedicated mold-inhibiting primer before repainting to help prevent its return.

Given the location and your children's symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The visible spot is likely just the tip of the iceberg; mold spores easily travel through the air and can colonize your AC system. The constant recirculation of air means those spores are being distributed throughout your home, which could be the direct cause of the persistent coughing.

Professional AC duct cleaning is not always necessary, but in a case like this with confirmed mold growth and health symptoms, it is a prudent step. A proper service will use HEPA-filtered vacuums and antimicrobial treatments to clean the entire system, not just the visible vents. For verification, choose a provider that can offer before-and-after testing from an accredited microbiology lab to confirm the air quality has been measurably improved. This is the only way to know the treatment was effective and your indoor environment is safe.
