Safest way to clean mold behind curtains myself?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since the holidays, and I’ve just found patches of black and green mold behind their bedroom curtains in our Jumeirah villa. We had that really humid spell a few weeks back and I think the moisture got trapped there. What’s the safest way to clean this myself without risking my family’s health?

First, ensure your children are not in the room and seal it off from the rest of the house by closing the door. Open a window in that room for ventilation if possible. For personal protection, wear an N95 mask, goggles, and disposable gloves.
Mix a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to four parts water in a spray bottle. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the colour and can release harmful fumes, especially in a poorly ventilated space. Lightly mist the affected wall area to dampen the mould and prevent spores from becoming airborne during cleaning. Using a disposable cloth, wipe the area clean, and immediately place the cloth in a sealed plastic bag for disposal. After cleaning, allow the wall to dry completely. Use a fan or dehumidifier to speed up the process; this is critical in Dubai's climate where high humidity can cause moisture to linger. Identify and address the source of the moisture. In this case, condensation formed because the curtain was trapping humid air against a cold exterior wall cooled by your AC. For a small, isolated patch, this method can be effective. However, given that the mould growth was significant enough to be visible in distinct colours and is associated with your children's respiratory symptoms, professional inspection is strongly advised. Visible mould is often just the surface manifestation of a deeper problem within the wall or insulation. Disturbing it without proper containment can spread spores throughout the home. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the full extent of the moisture issue and take air or surface samples for lab analysis to identify the mould species. This is important for health reasons, as some species are more problematic than others. In villas, this type of condensation mould on cold walls is very common and usually requires adjustments to AC airflow or humidity control to prevent recurrence, not just cleaning. |
