How to safely clean mold and prevent it returning?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot lately and I’m worried it’s because of the black spots I just found in the corner of our master bedroom closet. We’ve lived in this Mirdif villa for two years and it’s the first time I’ve seen this, probably made worse by the recent humidity. What’s the most effective way to clean this safely and what kind of dehumidifier should I get to stop it from coming back?

Black mold growth in a closet is common in Dubai villas, especially during humid periods, and can certainly cause respiratory irritation like coughing. For a small area, you can clean it yourself safely. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a solution of one part white vinegar to three parts water. Avoid bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage surfaces.
To prevent it from returning, you must control the humidity. A desiccant dehumidifier is more effective than a refrigerant model for Dubai's climate, especially for use in enclosed spaces like closets. Look for a unit with a capacity suitable for the room's size and a built-in hygrometer to maintain humidity below 50%. Ensure the room and closet are well-ventilated and that your AC is running efficiently, as consistent cooling also removes moisture from the air. However, since this is affecting your children's health and the mold is inside your home, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Visible spots are often just the tip of the iceberg; the mold can penetrate building materials. A certified inspector can use moisture meters to find the source of the dampness—which could be a small condensation leak from an AC pipe inside the wall—and take air or surface samples for lab analysis to confirm the species. This identifies the actual risk level and ensures the remediation plan is complete, protecting your family from repeated exposure. |
