Is mold causing my kids' cough and need professional treatment?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past week and I just found a patch of black and green mold behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived in our Jumeirah Park villa for two years and never had an issue, but it must have started after that really humid spell we had. Is this something I need to get treated professionally right away, or can I handle it myself with a vinegar solution this weekend?

It's very possible the mold is contributing to their cough. Mold exposure commonly causes respiratory irritation, especially in children. The humid spell we had is a classic trigger—it creates condensation on cold walls behind furniture, providing the perfect damp environment for mold to grow.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can attempt to clean it yourself. A vinegar solution can work on some surface mold, but it doesn't address the spores or the moisture source. Wear an N95 mask and gloves, and isolate the area so spores aren't spread throughout the house during cleaning.

However, finding visible mold often means there's more hidden mold you can't see, possibly inside the wall or in the AC system, which could be circulating spores. Given the symptoms and the fact it's behind furniture—a common spot for persistent dampness—a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the full extent of the problem and identify the root cause, which is crucial for preventing its return. In Dubai's climate, simply cleaning the visible spot rarely solves the issue permanently.

A reputable inspector can also take an air or surface sample for lab analysis to identify the species, which determines the health risk and appropriate remediation method. This step provides concrete evidence of what you're dealing with. For health concerns with children involved, erring on the side of a professional assessment is the safest course of action.
