How to remove and prevent black mold in humid weather?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, on the exterior wall. It wasn't there during the summer, but since the weather got more humid, it's appeared and has a really damp smell. I'm worried it's because of the recent humidity and our AC might not be drying the air enough inside. What's the most effective way to remove this safely and what can I do to stop it from coming back, especially during the cooler months?

Black mold in a closet on an exterior wall is a classic sign of condensation due to the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the humid outside air. Dubai's high humidity, especially during the cooler months, exacerbates this.

For removal, first address the moisture source. Ensure your AC is set to a consistently cool temperature, ideally between 22-24°C, as this helps it dehumidify effectively. Do not turn it off for long periods. For the existing patch, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Clean small areas (under 1 sqm) with a mixture of detergent and water, scrubbing the hard surface. Avoid bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage materials. After cleaning, dry the area completely with a fan.

To prevent recurrence, improve air circulation. Leave the closet doors slightly ajar and avoid overpacking it. Consider using a renewable desiccant like silica gel inside the closet to absorb excess moisture. For the wall itself, inspect the exterior sealant and cladding for cracks that may be allowing humid air to penetrate; sealing these can be crucial.

If the mold covers a larger area, has a persistent musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use moisture meters to find hidden dampness and lab-test the mold to identify the species, which is important for determining the correct remediation protocol, especially in a living space.
