How to remove black mold and prevent AC mold?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual, and I finally checked behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom and found a huge patch of black mold. We’ve lived in this Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity. What’s the best way to completely remove this ourselves and what should I do to the AC unit to make sure it doesn’t come back?

Black mold behind furniture is common in Jumeirah villas due to high humidity and condensation from AC units. For a patch larger than one square meter, DIY removal is not recommended due to health risks from airborne spores. For smaller areas, wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Isolate the area with plastic sheeting. Scrub the surface with a mixture of detergent and water—avoid bleach as it doesn't prevent regrowth. Dry the area completely with fans.
The AC unit is likely the source of the moisture causing the mold. The evaporator coils and drip pan are common breeding grounds. To prevent recurrence, you must ensure the AC condensate drain line is clear and flowing properly. Have a licensed HVAC technician service the unit to clean the coils and check the insulation. Maintaining a relative humidity inside below 60% is critical; using a dehumidifier in conjunction with your AC can help achieve this, especially during the more humid months. Given the size you describe and the children's symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can identify the specific mold type, assess the full extent of the growth (including inside walls or the AC system), and verify the remediation was successful with post-cleaning air quality tests. This is the most reliable way to ensure the environment is safe for your family. |
