Black mold in closet—professional or DIY from ACE?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah. It’s been really humid lately and I’m worried it’s getting worse. What’s the best way to handle this properly—should I call a professional cleaning company or is there a specific product I can get from ACE Hardware to tackle it myself first?

Black spots spreading in a closet on an outside wall are a classic sign of condensation-related mold growth, which is extremely common in Dubai's humid climate. The outside villa walls heat up significantly, and when the air-conditioned interior air meets that cold wall surface inside the closet, moisture condenses and creates the perfect damp environment for mold.

For a small, surface-level area, a DIY approach can be attempted. Use a microfiber cloth and a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover from a hardware store. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. The critical step is to address the moisture source. Ensure the closet is not overpacked to allow for air circulation, and leave the door ajar periodically. Wipe down the wall to remove any fresh condensation.

However, if the mold has penetrated the porous surface of the drywall or plaster, or if it returns quickly after cleaning, the growth is likely more extensive behind the surface. In these cases, DIY cleaning only addresses the visible tip of the problem. A professional inspection is recommended to assess the full extent and identify the precise condensation point. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to see behind walls. For villas, ensuring the exterior wall sealant and insulation are intact is often part of the long-term solution. Lab testing can also identify the mold type, which is important for determining the appropriate remediation protocol, especially if occupants are experiencing health effects.
