How to stop closet mold in humid Jumeirah weather?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah has started to get a faint damp smell, especially in the mornings. I’ve noticed a few small black speckles on a couple of leather bags stored in the back. This seems to have gotten worse since the weather turned more humid last month. What’s the most effective way to stop this mold from spreading and prevent it from coming back for good?

The damp smell and black speckles point to mold growth, likely fueled by condensation from the exterior villa wall. This is a common issue in Jumeirah due to high humidity, especially at night when ACs are often turned off, allowing moisture to condense on cooler surfaces.

First, address the immediate problem. Remove all items from the closet. For hard surfaces, clean with a solution of detergent and water. A mixture of one part white vinegar to four parts water can also be effective for non-porous surfaces. Dry everything thoroughly. Leather items should be professionally cleaned to prevent damage. Discard any severely affected porous items like cardboard boxes.

To prevent its return, you must control humidity and improve airflow. This is the most critical step. Keep the closet doors slightly ajar to allow air circulation. Ensure your AC is running consistently, even at a higher temperature at night, to control humidity. A small desiccant dehumidifier or moisture absorber placed inside the closet can be very effective. Check that the room's AC vent is not blocked and is directing air into the space.

Investigate the exterior wall. Ensure there are no cracks or leaks letting in moisture. The wall may be experiencing thermal bridging, where the temperature difference causes condensation inside. Improving the insulation on that wall could be a long-term solution.

For persistent or widespread mold, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the moisture source and species of mold, as some types require specific remediation protocols. Companies with their own microbiology labs can provide precise identification and post-remediation verification testing to ensure the issue is resolved.
