Mold behind AC causing kids' constant cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I'm starting to panic. I finally pulled out the sofa in our living room to look behind it and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold on the wall, right where the AC unit is. We've lived in this Jumeirah villa for years and never had an issue until now. Could this mold be the reason for their constant cold-like symptoms and should I be taking them to a doctor immediately?

Yes, the mold behind your AC unit is very likely contributing to your children's persistent cough. In Dubai's climate, AC units are common sources of mold growth due to condensation creating constant dampness. The continuous circulation of air then disperses mold spores throughout your living space, which can cause respiratory irritation, congestion, and coughing, especially in children.
You should have them see a pediatrician to rule out other causes and discuss the mold exposure. For the mold itself, a professional inspection is strongly recommended for a case this size. They can identify the specific species—what's called "black mold" is often Aspergillus niger here, which is a known respiratory irritant—and assess if it has spread inside the AC unit or wall cavity. Immediate steps you can take include keeping the children out of that room, ensuring good ventilation, and running a dehumidifier. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize spores and worsen the problem. Proper remediation involves containment, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment to address the root cause, which is often a clogged condensate drain or poor insulation allowing condensation. |
