How to permanently fix recurring damp and mold?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our Jumeirah Village Circle villa has a persistent damp smell, especially on the lower part of the walls behind the furniture. We run the AC constantly, but after last winter's heavier rains, we found a patch of black mold in the corner of the walk-in closet. What's the most effective long-term solution to stop this from coming back every season?

Recurring damp and mold in a JVC villa is a structural issue, not a surface one. The constant AC use lowers the air temperature, but if the walls themselves are cold from thermal bridging or lack of proper insulation, they will fall below the dew point. This causes condensation inside the wall cavity, which is hidden behind furniture and creates the perfect environment for mold to thrive seasonally.

The only permanent fix requires a professional inspection to identify the moisture source. In many post-rain cases here, the issue is minor water intrusion through the external wall or a compromised sealant around windows that soaks the internal blockwork. The solution involves three steps: first, a moisture meter survey to map the dampness within the wall; second, rectifying the external breach; and third, addressing any internal condensation through improved insulation or dedicated dehumidification for that room.

Simply cleaning the visible mold and running the AC is not enough, as the AC handles humidity in the air but not moisture trapped within materials. For a long-term solution, you need a diagnostic approach that verifies the wall assembly is dry. Companies with their own microbiology labs can provide the necessary before-and-after testing to confirm the remediation was effective and the root cause is solved.
