Is shower mold urgent for landlord to fix?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I finally pulled back the rubber seal around the shower door in our master bathroom. There's a ton of black and green mold growing there that I never noticed before. We've lived in this Marina apartment for 2 years and just noticed this, but now I'm really worried about their health. How urgent is it to get this professionally cleaned, and is this something I need to notify my landlord about immediately?

Yes, this is urgent to address for health reasons and requires landlord notification. The black and green mold you discovered behind the seal is actively releasing spores into your bathroom's air, which is likely contributing to your children's coughing and respiratory irritation.

Under Dubai's rental regulations (Law No. 26 of 2007), landlords are responsible for maintaining the property's structure and ensuring it is habitable, which includes addressing issues like persistent mold that affect indoor air quality and tenant health. You should notify them in writing immediately, as this is a pre-existing condition likely caused by inadequate ventilation or a sealing failure, not tenant misuse. Include clear photos of the growth.

Given the Marina's high humidity and constant AC use, bathrooms are prime mold locations due to condensation. While cleaning the visible growth is a start, the underlying moisture problem must be fixed to prevent rapid regrowth. A professional inspection can identify the source—often faulty bathroom extractor fans that aren't venting properly or compromised grout—and provide a remediation report for your landlord. For health safety during cleaning, keep the bathroom door closed, run the extractor fan during and after showers, and consider an air purifier if coughing persists.
