How to remove mold from damp wall and prevent recurrence?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when we moved the furniture to rearrange. The wall feels damp and has these black spots spreading from the corner. What's the best way to treat this ourselves to kill it for good and what could be causing the dampness in the wall to prevent it from coming back?

For a small patch (under one square foot), scrub with a mixture of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, since the wall is damp and the mold is behind furniture, the visible growth is likely just the tip of the iceberg. The dampness indicates an ongoing moisture source that must be addressed first.

In Dubai villas, this dampness typically stems from one of two issues. The most common is a hidden plumbing leak from pipes within the wall. The second is condensation due to our high humidity, where cold air from an AC unit in one room chills an poorly insulated exterior wall in another, causing moisture to condense inside. Simply killing the surface mold will not stop it from returning.

Given the size, the hidden moisture source, and your children's symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to pinpoint the exact cause without unnecessary demolition. Remediation involves fixing the leak or improving insulation and ventilation, then properly removing the contaminated materials. For health safety, especially with children, ensure the company provides before-and-after lab results to verify the space has been returned to a healthy baseline.
