Is black mold making my family sick urgently?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the last couple of weeks and I’ve just found patches of black mold behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa. It’s been so humid lately and I’m worried it’s spreading. How urgent is it to get this professionally treated, and is this something that could be making my family sick right now?

Black mold exposure can absolutely cause the symptoms you're describing, especially in children. The persistent coughing is a common reaction to mold spores in the air, which irritate the respiratory system. Given Dubai's high humidity and the condensation that can form on cold walls behind furniture, this is a frequent issue in villas.

The urgency is high. You've found a visible patch, which often means there is a larger colony hidden within the wall cavity or behind baseboards. Disturbing it yourself, even by moving the wardrobe, can release a massive cloud of spores throughout your home, potentially worsening your family's health. Professional remediation is strongly advised to properly contain and remove the source.

In the UAE, the Dubai Municipality has clear guidelines for mold remediation in buildings to ensure it is handled safely and effectively. A proper inspection will identify the moisture source—often a small plumbing leak, capillary action from the slab, or condensation from AC ducts—and a certified team will use containment barriers and HEPA filtration to remove the mold without cross-contaminating other rooms.

For your family's health, I recommend arranging a professional assessment immediately. They can perform air quality tests to identify spore types and concentration levels. In the interim, improve ventilation in the room and keep the bedroom door closed to limit spore spread to other areas. Do not attempt to clean it with bleach, as this can aggravate the situation.
