Is black mold urgent to treat in a week??« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some clothes. It’s been extra humid lately and that wall faces the outside. My wife has been waking up with a stuffy nose and I'm starting to get worried. Is this something I need to get treated professionally like, tomorrow, or can it wait a week for our building's maintenance to do their rounds?

Yes, it should be treated promptly, ideally within the week. The combination of Dubai's high humidity and an exterior wall suggests a persistent moisture source, likely condensation from the AC or a minor leak. The symptoms you describe are consistent with mould exposure.

For a patch roughly the size of an A4 sheet of paper or smaller, building maintenance can likely handle it. Ensure they don't just wipe it; they must identify and rectify the moisture source first, otherwise it will return quickly. If the area is larger, or if the wall feels damp, a professional inspection is wise to assess potential hidden growth inside the wall cavity.

Until it's addressed, move the clothes away from the wall, improve air circulation in the closet, and consider running a dehumidifier in the room. For verifiable results, especially with health symptoms present, a post-remediation surface swab sent to an independent microbiology lab can confirm the mould has been properly removed.
