Mold under carpet from AC making son cough?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our villa in Jumeirah 3 has been making my son cough at night, and I just pulled back the corner of the bedroom carpet and found a bunch of black spots underneath. It’s been extra humid lately and I’m worried it’s spreading. Is this something I can treat myself with a bleach solution, or do I need to call a professional mold inspection company to check the AC unit and the walls?

Black spots under carpeting with a child coughing at night warrants professional inspection, especially in Dubai's humid climate. The AC unit may be contributing to the problem by creating condensation or not adequately controlling humidity, allowing mold to thrive in hidden spaces like under carpets and inside walls.

A bleach solution is a temporary surface fix and will not address the root cause or hidden growth. Disturbing it yourself can release a large number of spores into your home's air, potentially worsening your son's cough. The species of mold matters; some types commonly found in damp building materials are more likely to cause respiratory irritation.

For a situation like this in a villa, a certified mold inspection is recommended. They will use moisture meters and borescopes to check inside walls and assess the AC system for leaks or condensation issues, which is a common source here. The goal is to identify all moisture sources to prevent recurrence after cleanup. A proper inspection provides a protocol for safe, effective remediation that protects your family during the process.

You can verify a company's credibility by asking if their inspection includes detailed moisture mapping and if they provide documented lab analysis from an accredited microbiology lab to identify the mold types present.
