How to treat nad prevent black mold in apartment?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when we moved the furniture to rearrange. The wall feels slightly damp even though it's an interior wall. What's the best way to treat this ourselves and prevent it from coming back in our Marina apartment?

Black mold behind furniture on a damp interior wall is a common issue in Dubai apartments, especially in humid areas like Marina. The dampness is likely from condensation due to the constant temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the warm exterior walls.

For a small patch (less than 1 square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 3 parts water or a diluted bleach solution (check product guidelines). Dry the wall completely with a fan; moisture is the real enemy.

Preventing its return requires addressing the humidity. This is the critical part in our climate. Move the wardrobe at least two inches away from the wall to allow air circulation. Wipe down condensation from AC vents and walls regularly. Ensure your AC unit is set to a consistent temperature and that its drip line is not clogged, as a blocked line can cause excess humidity. Running a dehumidifier in the room, especially during more humid periods, can help measurably reduce ambient moisture.

Given the symptoms you described and the hidden nature of the growth, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Mold spores can travel through the air and affect air quality beyond the immediate visible area. A proper assessment includes moisture meters to find the exact source of the dampness and air quality tests to identify spore types and concentrations, which is important for understanding potential health impacts. DIY cleaning often addresses the surface growth but misses the hidden moisture source, leading to rapid recurrence.
