How to reduce closet humidity and prevent mold?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall in our Jumeirah villa, has started to get dark black spots on the leather bags and shoes we store in there. We run the AC constantly but the room always feels more humid than the rest of the house. What’s the most effective way to reduce the humidity in that specific closet to stop the mold from coming back?

The most effective way to reduce humidity in that specific closet is a multi-step approach, starting with identifying and controlling the moisture source. In Dubai's climate, the constant AC use creates a significant temperature differential, and an interior closet on an exterior wall is a prime spot for condensation to form if there's any compromise in the insulation or vapour barrier.
First, improve air circulation. A closet is a dead air space. Keep the doors open as much as possible and use a small, battery-operated dehumidifier or a renewable desiccant product like DampRid inside it. For a more permanent solution, have an HVAC technician assess if a duct can be extended to provide a small, constant supply of cooled air directly into the closet. This is often the most effective fix. Second, address the contents. Leather is organic and feeds mould. Wipe all affected items with a solution of white vinegar and water (1:1 ratio), then allow them to dry completely in a well-ventilated, dry area before considering returning them to the closet. The persistent high humidity in just one room, despite constant AC, suggests a potential issue beyond simple condensation. It could be a hidden plumbing leak in the wall or, more commonly in villas, a breach in the external vapour barrier allowing humid air to seep in from outside. This is a serious case where a professional inspection with thermal imaging and moisture meters is recommended to find the exact entry point of the moisture, as surface cleaning alone will not provide a long-term solution. |
