AC leaking caused mold, DIY fix or call pro in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit of water onto the carpet for a couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing a patch of black and green mold spreading out from the wall near the unit. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but the smell is still really strong and it seems to be coming back. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call a professional mold removal company in Dubai?

A leaking AC unit causing visible mold growth on a wall and carpet is a significant issue in Dubai's climate and requires professional assessment. The high humidity here allows mold to spread quickly into building materials you can't see, like the drywall and carpet backing. Vinegar is a surface-level solution that doesn't address the root cause or the hidden microbial growth.

For a situation involving persistent water damage and a strong musty odor, a DIY approach is not recommended. The moisture has likely penetrated porous materials, creating a reservoir for mold to return. You need to identify and fix the AC leak first—often a clogged condensate drain line—to stop the moisture source.

Professional remediation is advised because the mold colony is already established. In Dubai, reputable companies should follow standards like the IICRC S520 for mold remediation. This involves containing the area, removing contaminated porous materials like affected drywall and carpet, HEPA vacuuming, and using EPA-registered antimicrobials. The goal is to return spore counts to normal outdoor levels, verified through post-remediation testing, which is a standard practice for companies with their own microbiology labs.

Attempting a stronger cleaner yourself could aerosolize spores and spread the contamination further without proper containment. Given the health risks associated with certain mold types and the complexity of a proper remediation, calling a professional to assess and resolve the issue is the safest course of action.
