How to treat bedroom mold and prevent humidity in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has been feeling really damp lately, and we just found patches of black mold in the corner behind the wardrobe. It's been like this since the humidity really kicked in last month. I'm worried about it spreading and affecting our health. What's the most effective way to treat this ourselves and what can we do to keep the humidity down in that specific room to stop it coming back?

For a small patch (under one square meter), you can treat it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of white vinegar and water or a dedicated mold remover, then dry it thoroughly. Discard any porous materials like cardboard or fabric that have mold growth. The key is not just cleaning but fixing the moisture source.

In Dubai, the high humidity, especially with ACs running constantly, creates significant condensation that fuels mold behind furniture. Move the wardrobe at least two inches away from the wall to allow air circulation. Use a portable dehumidifier in that room; aim to keep relative humidity below 60%. Ensure your AC unit is set to a consistently cool temperature and that its filters are clean to reduce moisture load.

For a recurring or large-scale problem, a professional inspection is recommended to identify hidden moisture in walls or AC systems and to confirm the mold type. In the UAE, remediation should follow standards like the IICRC S520 for proper containment and removal to prevent cross-contamination.
