Black grout spreading in bathroom: DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our Jumeirah villa's master bathroom has started turning black, and it's spreading up the wall behind the toilet. It's been getting worse since the weather got really humid a couple of months ago, and now there's a constant damp smell in there. I'm handy with a bleach spray, but I'm worried it's deeper than just surface level. Should I tackle this myself or is it time to call in a professional cleaning company?

Black grout spreading up the wall in a Jumeirah villa is a classic sign of a persistent moisture issue, not just surface mold. The high humidity here creates condensation inside walls, especially behind toilets where cold water pipes run. Bleach only removes surface color; it doesn't address the moisture source or the hyphae (root structures) growing deep within the porous grout and wall.

For a spreading problem with a constant damp smell, a DIY approach is unlikely to succeed and may push contamination deeper. The Dubai climate means this will almost certainly recur without proper diagnosis. You need to identify the moisture source—it could be a leaking pipe seal, insufficient waterproofing, or condensation from the AC creating a cold spot.

Professional assessment is advised. A reputable inspector will use a moisture meter to pinpoint the water intrusion behind the tile and can take an air sample to identify the spore count in the room. In serious cases, the grout and possibly sections of the wall need removal to dry the structure properly before any remediation. Look for a provider that offers concrete evidence of the problem and a clear plan to resolve the underlying cause, not just a surface clean.
