Is bathroom mold urgent with a sneezing child?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom in our Jumeirah Village Triangle apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, but after the recent humidity, I just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the grout between the wall tiles. My youngest has been sneezing a lot more lately, which is making me really anxious. Given the UAE's climate, how urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this mold, or is it something I can handle myself with a cleaner from ACE this weekend?

Yes, it's urgent to address bathroom mold when a child is sneezing. The UAE's high humidity creates ideal conditions for mold growth, and bathroom grout provides the perfect organic material for it to feed on. The sneezing is likely a direct reaction to the mold spores becoming airborne.

For a small, surface-level patch (less than a square foot), you can attempt cleaning with a dedicated grout mold remover or a diluted bleach solution. Scrub thoroughly and ensure the bathroom is extremely well-ventilated during and after—keep the child out of the area entirely until fumes dissipate and surfaces are dry.

However, if the black spots are spreading or have returned after previous cleaning, it indicates a persistent moisture issue behind the tiles or in the wall cavity. This hidden growth releases a much higher concentration of spores. In this case, a surface cleaner is a temporary fix. A professional inspection is needed to identify the moisture source, assess the extent of the growth, and perform remediation that includes containment to prevent spores from spreading throughout your apartment during cleaning. They can also provide a lab analysis to identify the mold type, which is critical information for a child with respiratory symptoms.
