How to prevent mold from returning in Dubai winter?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I’m worried it’s from the black spots I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe in our Jumeirah villa. We had that really humid spell a few weeks back and I think that’s when it started. What’s the best long-term solution to stop this from coming back every winter?

Visible mold means there's a hidden moisture source and likely a larger colony. The humid spell was the trigger, but the root cause is persistent dampness. In Dubai villas, this is often condensation from AC units, plumbing leaks behind walls, or moisture wicking up from the foundation.
First, address the immediate problem. For a small area (less than one square meter), you can clean it with a microfiber cloth and a solution of detergent and water. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. For anything larger, or if it's on drywall, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the extent and identify the exact moisture source. They can use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find problems you can't see. The long-term solution is controlling humidity. Keep indoor relative humidity below 60% year-round; a hygrometer is an inexpensive tool to monitor this. Ensure your AC is correctly sized and functioning, as it is your primary dehumidifier. Run it consistently, even in winter, to manage ambient moisture. Increase air circulation behind large furniture like wardrobes; even a small gap between the furniture and wall helps tremendously. For the specific wall, after a professional remediation, consider applying a mold-resistant primer and paint. Ultimately, the most effective prevention is fixing the underlying moisture intrusion, whether it's sealing a foundation, repairing a pipe leak, or improving ventilation in that room. |
