Is black mold behind bed urgent for kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I finally pulled their mattress away from the wall in our Deira apartment. I found a patch of black mold about the size of a dinner plate behind it, and the wall feels a bit damp. The AC unit is on that same wall and it's been running constantly with the humidity. How urgently do I need to get this professionally treated, and is it safe for them to sleep in their room tonight?

Yes, this is an urgent situation that requires immediate action. Given the visible mold, damp wall, and your children's symptoms, professional assessment and remediation should be arranged as soon as possible.

The combination of a constantly running AC unit on that wall and high Dubai humidity is a classic recipe for this problem. The cold surface of the wall behind the AC unit's condensate drain line or insulation can create a condensation point, leading to dampness and mold growth directly behind it. The mattress pressed against the wall trapped the moisture, creating an ideal environment for mold. The persistent coughing you describe is a common reaction to elevated mold spore levels in an enclosed space.

For tonight, it is not safe for them to sleep in that room. Mold spores become airborne when disturbed, and their proximity while sleeping means continuous exposure. Move them to another well-ventilated room immediately. Do not attempt to clean the patch yourself, as improper scrubbing can aerosolize a high volume of spores throughout the apartment.

A professional inspection is critical to identify the moisture source—often a poorly insulated AC condensate line, a leak in the drain pan, or seepage from the building envelope. Remediation involves containing the area, safely removing the contaminated materials, and applying antimicrobial treatments. Crucially, the root moisture issue must be fixed; otherwise, the mold will return. A reputable provider will use lab analysis to confirm the mold type and verify the cleanup's effectiveness with post-remediation testing.
