How to remove mold behind wardrobe in Jumeirah?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah Village Circle. It's been really humid lately and I'm worried it's mold. What's the best way to get rid of this properly and who should I call to assess it?

That black spotting behind the wardrobe is a classic sign of mold growth, almost certainly fueled by Dubai's high humidity and condensation from your AC unit. The wall behind furniture becomes a stagnant air pocket where moisture gets trapped, creating an ideal environment for mold.

For a small area, you can clean it yourself with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) or a commercial mold remover. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. However, simply wiping the surface is often insufficient. The mold may have penetrated the plasterboard or paint, and the underlying moisture issue must be addressed. Move the wardrobe away from the wall to improve air circulation, a critical step in our climate.

Given it's spreading and located in a bedroom, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. The inspector will identify the mold type and, more importantly, the moisture source—whether it's a slow leak, condensation, or rising damp. In JVC, construction-related water intrusion is a common culprit they are trained to spot.

You should call a certified mold inspector or a remediation company with their own microbiology lab capabilities. They will provide a detailed report with species identification and remediation protocol. This documented assessment is vital; Dubai Municipality and many landlords require a professional report to authorize any significant remedial work. Avoid companies that offer to both test and remediate without a separate diagnostic phase, as this is a conflict of interest. The proper sequence is inspection first, then remediation by a qualified team.
