How to permanently remove mold in humid Jumeirah?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. It’s been extra humid lately and I’m worried it’s the reason my husband’s allergies have been so bad this month. What’s the best way to get rid of this mold for good in our climate?

The black spots behind your wardrobe are a classic sign of condensation mold, a very common issue in Jumeirah due to the high humidity and lack of air circulation behind furniture. This is almost certainly contributing to your husband's allergy flare-ups.

For a permanent solution, you must address the moisture source first. Move the wardrobe away from the wall to allow air to circulate. Wipe the wall down with a diluted detergent solution to remove the surface growth, but this is only a temporary fix. The wall itself is likely damp and the mold has penetrated the paint.

In our climate, simply cleaning the visible mold is insufficient; the high humidity will cause it to return. You need a professional inspection to identify the extent of the moisture penetration and the mold species. Remediation involves isolating the area, physically removing the contaminated material (like the affected drywall or paint), treating the area with antimicrobial solutions, and then ensuring the wall is completely dry before repainting with a mold-resistant primer and paint.

Crucially, you must then control the indoor humidity. Ensure your AC is serviced and draining properly, as it is your primary dehumidifier. Consider using a standalone dehumidifier in the bedroom, especially during the more humid months. Keeping doors open and using ceiling fans can also improve air circulation and prevent stagnant, humid air pockets from forming behind furniture.
