How to remove and prevent mold in UAE bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has been feeling really damp lately, and I just found a patch of black, speckled mold in the corner behind our wardrobe. We run the AC constantly, but the room never feels properly dry, especially with the humidity we've had this past month. What's the most effective way to treat this myself and prevent it from coming back, considering the UAE climate?

Black mold in UAE bedrooms is often linked to high humidity and condensation from AC units. The first step is to identify and address the moisture source—this is critical in our climate.

For a small patch (less than one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Use a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to three parts water; vinegar is more effective than bleach at killing the mold and preventing regrowth on porous surfaces. Scrub the area, let it dry completely, and then dispose of any contaminated rags. Move the wardrobe away from the wall to improve air circulation.

To prevent recurrence, you must control the room's humidity. Ensure your AC is functioning correctly; a faulty unit might not be dehumidifying the air properly. Clean or replace the AC filter regularly. Use a standalone dehumidifier in the room, especially during humid months, aiming to keep relative humidity below 60%. Run ceiling fans to keep air moving and prevent stagnant, damp pockets.

If the mold covers a larger area, has a musty odor, or returns after cleaning, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find hidden dampness within walls or from AC drain line leaks, which are common here. A lab test can also confirm the mold type, which is important for assessing health risks and planning the correct remediation strategy.
