Is black mold dangerous for my pregnant wife and kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and we can't figure out why. I just pulled out a storage box from the corner of our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa and found a huge patch of black mold on the wall behind it, probably from a slow leak we never noticed. My wife is pregnant and I'm really worried about how dangerous this is for everyone. How urgently do we need to get this professionally cleaned, and should we stay somewhere else until it's fixed?

Black mold exposure can be particularly concerning for pregnant women and children due to their more sensitive respiratory and immune systems. For your pregnant wife, the primary risks are increased allergy symptoms, sinus congestion, and potential respiratory irritation, which can be especially uncomfortable. For children, the non-stop coughing is a classic reaction to mold spores, often presenting as a persistent, dry cough that doesn't respond to typical cold medicines.

Given the discovery of a significant patch in your Jumeirah villa, this situation warrants immediate and professional attention. The combination of Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use creates perfect conditions for mold to thrive behind furniture or in poorly ventilated corners, often from undetected minor leaks. You should arrange for a professional mold inspection to identify the exact species and the full extent of the contamination, as hidden growth within the wall is likely.

Until a professional assessment can be done, it is prudent to limit exposure. Keep everyone, especially your wife and kids, out of that room entirely. If the coughing is severe, staying elsewhere until the initial inspection is complete is a sensible precaution. Do not attempt to disturb or clean the patch yourself, as this will aerosolize a high concentration of spores throughout your home.

The remediation process itself must be handled by certified professionals who will use containment barriers and HEPA filtration to prevent cross-contamination. After removal, a post-remediation verification test from an independent lab is the only way to confirm the air quality is safe for your family to return.
