Is black mold dangerous for my toddler next door?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It wasn't there during my last deep clean a few months ago, but with the recent humidity, it seems to have appeared. My main concern is my toddler who sleeps in the room next door. Given how quickly it showed up, is this something I need to get professionally treated immediately, or can I handle it myself with bleach this weekend?

Black mold's danger depends on the specific species and your toddler's health. Many common black-colored molds in Dubai homes, like Cladosporium or Aspergillus niger, are irritants that can worsen allergies, asthma, or cause congestion and coughing, particularly in children. The primary risk is from inhaling the spores it releases.
Given its location in a closet and recent appearance due to humidity, it's likely fueled by condensation or a small, unnoticed moisture source. The UAE's climate means AC units create cold surfaces where humidity condenses, often inside poorly insulated external walls or closets. This rapid growth indicates an active moisture problem that must be solved first. For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself wearing a mask and gloves. However, bleach is not recommended on porous surfaces like drywall or wood as it only surface-cleans and can add moisture. Use a detergent and water solution instead, then ensure the area is completely dried. Discard any moldy storage items. Because a toddler is next door, the most prudent step is a professional inspection. They can identify the exact mold species through lab analysis to confirm its type and the underlying moisture source, which is critical to prevent immediate regrowth. DIY cleaning without fixing the cause is temporary. If the mold returns after cleaning, covers a larger area, or you notice a musty smell, professional assessment is strongly advised to ensure your indoor air quality is safe. |
