Safe way to remove child's room mold in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks now, and I just discovered a patch of black mold behind their bedroom wardrobe, which is on an exterior wall in our villa in Jumeirah. I think it might have started after the heavy dew we had last month. I'm really worried about their health and need to deal with this quickly. What is the most effective and safe way to remove mold in a child's room, and should I hire a professional company here in Dubai for this?

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself with a solution of one part white vinegar to three parts water. Wear an N95 mask and gloves, and scrub the area thoroughly. Never use bleach, as it only removes the color and can release harmful fumes, especially in an enclosed space.

However, given the location (behind furniture on an exterior wall) and the health symptoms, this is likely a more serious case. The wall cavity itself may be damp, and the visible patch is often just the tip of the iceberg. The heavy dew and high humidity here create perfect conditions for mold to grow inside walls, where AC cooling meets warm exterior surfaces.

For a child's room, the safest approach is professional remediation. Look for a company that follows IICRC standards for containment, using physical barriers and negative air machines to prevent spores from spreading to the rest of the house during removal. They should also identify and rectify the moisture source—in your case, this could be condensation due to thermal bridging or a minor leak exacerbated by the climate.

After remediation, request a clearance test from an independent third-party to verify the spore count in the room has returned to a normal level. This is the only way to be certain the environment is safe for your children again.
