AC causing mold symptoms in Dubai apartment?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah seems to be blowing out a damp, earthy smell that’s gotten worse over the last month. My throat has been constantly scratchy and I’m waking up with headaches, which I never used to get. I checked the vent and can see some black speckling around the edges. Is this likely to be the cause of my symptoms and what’s the proper way to get it cleaned here?

Yes, your symptoms and the visible black speckling are strong indicators of a mold issue in your AC unit. The damp, earthy smell is a classic sign of microbial growth, and the scratchy throat and headaches are common reactions to inhaling mold spores. Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for condensation inside the ducts, which allows mold to thrive.

For a proper remediation, a standard AC cleaning service is insufficient. The process must address the source. A professional inspection should first confirm the mold type and extent using lab testing, as this dictates the remediation protocol. Proper removal involves containing the area to prevent spore spread, physically removing the biomass with HEPA vacuuming and antimicrobial cleaning of the entire duct system, not just the visible vent. The evaporator coil and drip pan, common moisture sources, must be thoroughly cleaned and treated.

After remediation, request post-cleaning verification, such as surface or air samples, to confirm spore levels have returned to a normal baseline. To prevent recurrence, ensure your AC drain line is clear and consider using a dehumidifier to maintain indoor humidity below 60%, especially during the more humid months.
