How to safely remove and prevent closet mold in humid AC?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few black spots forming in the corner of our master bedroom closet where the wall meets the ceiling. It’s an interior wall in our apartment in Jumeirah, and with the AC running constantly, I'm worried the humidity is getting trapped there. What's the best way to clean this safely and prevent it from coming back for good?

Black mold in closets is common in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant AC use creating temperature differentials. The AC cools the room air, but that cold air hitting a warmer interior wall (like a closet exterior wall) causes condensation, creating the damp environment mold needs.

For a small area like you describe, you can clean it yourself safely. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Do not dry brush it, as this releases spores. Instead, lightly mist the area with a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and water or a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 4 parts water) to kill the mold and keep spores from aerosolizing. Gently scrub with a soft brush, then wipe clean with a damp cloth. Ensure the area is completely dry afterward.

Preventing its return is the critical part. The issue is likely poor air circulation and a cold spot in that corner. First, improve airflow. Leave the closet doors open periodically and consider installing a small battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber inside. Ensure your AC unit is serviced and its drain line is clear to prevent excess humidity. For a more permanent solution, have an HVAC technician check if the cold air supply is too direct onto that wall, which may require adjusting the vent direction.

If the mold covers an area larger than one square meter, returns quickly after cleaning, or you smell a persistent musty odor, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use a borescope to check for mold inside the wall cavity and perform air or surface sampling to identify the species, which is important for assessing health risks and ensuring the remediation plan is effective. In Dubai villas and apartments, this hidden growth behind walls is a frequent issue.
