Is black mold in shower urgent or DIY fixable?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower has been getting these dark, fuzzy black spots over the last couple of months. I tried scrubbing it with bleach, but it just faded a little and came back darker a week later. The room always feels damp, no matter how much we run the exhaust fan. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with something stronger from ACE Hardware?

Black mold in showers is common here due to Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use, which creates condensation. The fact it returned after bleaching suggests a deeper issue within the grout or behind the tiles.

For a small, surface-level patch, a stronger fungicidal cleaner from a hardware store might work if you improve ventilation. However, since it's recurring and the room stays damp, this indicates persistent moisture, making a DIY fix unlikely to be a permanent solution. The dampness could be from a hidden leak or insufficient waterproofing, which are serious in villa construction.

Professional assessment is recommended to determine the source of the moisture. They can conduct non-invasive moisture mapping to see if water has penetrated behind the tiles. In many cases, the grout and possibly the tiles themselves need to be removed to address the root cause and prevent structural damage or mold spreading to other areas. Recurring mold in a frequently used bathroom like the master shower warrants an inspection to verify the extent.
