AC mold smell and black specks: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been making a weird damp smell for the last couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing some black specks around the vent in the master bedroom. I’m worried it’s mold from the humidity. Is this something I can clean myself with a vinegar spray, or do I need to call a professional mold inspection company to check the ducts?

That damp smell and visible black specks are classic signs of a mold issue in your AC system, a common problem in Dubai's humid climate where ACs run constantly and create condensation. For a surface-level issue on the visible vent, a thorough cleaning with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution can be effective. However, the smell indicates the growth is likely deeper within the unit or ductwork, which you cannot safely or effectively access yourself.

Attempting a DIY clean on the internal system often just disperses spores throughout your apartment. A professional inspection is recommended to assess the full extent. They use borescopes to inspect deep inside ducts and often recommend air and surface sampling. This is crucial, as the black specks could be anything from harmless dust to Stachybotrys (black mold); only a lab culture can identify the species and potential risk.

In the UAE, companies offering inspection and testing should be able to provide a detailed report with lab findings, not just a visual assessment. This evidence-based approach is what differentiates a proper diagnosis from a simple cleaning service. For a situation like yours with both odor and visible growth, starting with an inspection will give you the facts needed to decide on the appropriate remediation steps.
