How to remove black mold from shower in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner where the shower wall meets the ceiling. It’s been really humid lately and I think the steam from our showers isn't venting properly. What's the best way to deal with this myself, or should I call a professional cleaning service here in Dubai?

Small patches of bathroom mold are common in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation from showers. For a patch the size you describe, DIY removal is often possible.

Start by improving ventilation. Run the exhaust fan during and for at least 30 minutes after every shower. If your fan is weak or you don't have one, opening a window is essential. Wipe down wet walls and floors with a squeegee after use to remove standing moisture. For cleaning, wear a mask and gloves. A solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover spray applied directly to the area can be effective. Scrub gently with a stiff brush, then rinse and dry the area thoroughly.

If the mold returns quickly, spreads, covers an area larger than a square meter, or if you notice a persistent musty smell, a professional inspection is recommended. In villas, the issue is often not just surface mold but moisture trapped within the wall or ceiling, especially if there's a roof leak or plumbing issue behind it. Recurring mold indicates an unresolved humidity problem that surface cleaning won't fix. A professional assessment can identify the moisture source and determine if the wall cavity requires remediation to prevent structural damage and potential health effects.
