AC mold around vent: DIY bleach or professional help?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be blowing out a damp, earthy smell, and I've just spotted black speckled patches starting to form around the vent in the master bedroom. It's been getting worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach, or do I need to call in a professional mold removal company, and what kind of cost am I looking at for a single room?

The damp, earthy smell and visible black speckles around your AC vent are classic signs of a mold colony, likely fueled by the recent high humidity in JVC. This is a common issue in Dubai due to our year-round AC use creating constant condensation inside the units.

Using bleach is not recommended. It's ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and only bleaches the mold's color, leaving the root colony intact. More critically, it can release harmful fumes into your air and doesn't address the moisture source feeding the growth.

For a small, surface-level patch (under ~10 sq. ft.), a thorough DIY clean with a microfiber cloth and a dedicated EPA-approved mold cleaner can be sufficient. However, if the mold has spread inside the vent or onto surrounding drywall, or if household members have respiratory sensitivities, professional assessment is strongly advised. They will identify the full extent, including hidden growth in the ductwork, and address the underlying moisture issue within the AC unit itself to prevent immediate recurrence.

The cost for professional remediation is not fixed; it varies significantly based on the extent of contamination. A small, contained area like a single vent and its immediate surroundings is typically a more limited scope of work. For an accurate assessment and quote, you should request an on-site inspection from a certified mold remediation provider. They should be able to explain the process and provide a clear scope of work before any service begins.
