Is black mold causing my husband's asthma?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It's on the wall that faces the outside of our villa in Arabian Ranches. I'm really worried because my husband's asthma has been acting up lately and I'm wondering if this is the cause. What's the first step I should take to deal with this safely?

Black mold exposure can certainly trigger asthma symptoms and worsen existing respiratory conditions. The correlation is plausible, especially given Dubai's high humidity and the tendency for exterior walls to develop condensation from constant AC use.

The first step is to identify the moisture source. In Arabian Ranches villas, this is often a small leak in the external wall's waterproofing or condensation from an AC duct running inside that wall cavity. Move the boxes away from the wall and wipe the visible mold with a diluted vinegar solution, but this is only a surface fix. The hidden mold within the wall is likely the main issue.

Given your husband's asthma, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the extent of the problem behind the wall. They will use moisture meters and borescopes to check for dampness and hidden growth. A proper remediation plan should include fixing the water intrusion, removing contaminated materials, and HEPA vacuuming. For health-related cases, post-remediation verification testing is wise to confirm the spore count in the room has returned to a normal baseline.
