Is hidden black mold dangerous for my kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop and I think I found the cause – a patch of black, fuzzy mold has spread behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived in this Jumeirah villa for two years and just noticed it when moving furniture. It must have been growing slowly from a hidden AC leak. How dangerous is this and can I clean it myself, or do I absolutely need to call a professional company here in Dubai?

Yes, hidden black mold can be dangerous for children, whose developing respiratory systems are more sensitive. The primary risk comes from inhaling the microscopic spores it releases, which can cause persistent coughing, wheezing, throat irritation, and worsened asthma or allergy symptoms. The concern is that this has been growing undetected for some time, meaning your kids have had prolonged exposure.

In Dubai's climate, this scenario is common. The high humidity and constant AC use create perfect conditions for mold when a hidden leak provides moisture. You cannot assess the true risk without knowing the species; "black mold" is often Aspergillus niger, which is a known respiratory irritant, but only a lab culture can confirm this and its concentration in your air.

Do not clean this yourself. Disturbing it will aerosolize a massive cloud of spores throughout your home, significantly increasing your family's inhalation exposure. The leak must also be identified and repaired by an AC technician first, or the mold will return immediately.

For a case of this size and with health symptoms already present, a professional inspection and remediation is strongly advised. Look for a company that conducts a full assessment, including air quality testing to identify spore counts, and can provide documented before-and-after lab results to verify the environment has been returned to a safe state. They will contain the area, use specialized equipment like HEPA vacuums to remove the mold safely, and treat the area to prevent regrowth. Resolving the source and the mold is crucial for your children's health.
