AC duct cleaning causing sore throat and headache?« Back to Previous Page

For the last few days, my throat has been incredibly scratchy and I've had a nagging headache that just won't quit, even after taking Panadol. I noticed it started right after my building in Jumeirah Village Circle did its annual deep clean of the AC ducts, and the air in my bedroom has felt really dry ever since. I'm wondering if this is just from the dust they kicked up and will clear on its own, or if I should actually go get it checked out at a clinic. Should I try using a humidifier and waiting a couple more days, or is this something worth seeing a doctor for?

Based on the symptoms you've described and the timing, it's highly probable the issues are directly related to the recent AC duct cleaning. This is a common complaint we see here in Dubai after improper or incomplete cleaning procedures.

The scratchy throat and persistent headache are classic signs of exposure to two primary irritants: 1) residual dust and debris that was dislodged but not fully extracted, and 2) chemical cleaning agents or disinfectants that may have been used and are now off-gassing into your bedroom air. The dry air feeling is a key indicator that the system may not have been fully reassembled correctly, potentially causing an imbalance or a small leak that is reducing humidity levels, which exacerbates the irritation.

In the UAE, AC cleaning is supposed to follow strict DWEPC and DM guidelines to prevent this exact scenario, but unfortunately, not all contractors adhere to them. The dust can contain a mix of allergens, mold spores, and general construction particulate that is highly irritating to the respiratory system.

Waiting it out is not advisable, as prolonged exposure can lead to more severe respiratory issues. A humidifier might offer minor symptomatic relief for the dryness but will not address the root cause of the contaminants. I strongly recommend you do two things: First, see a doctor to address your current symptoms. Second, have the ductwork professionally inspected to ensure the cleaning was done properly and that there is no residual contamination or system damage.

Our team can conduct a full indoor air quality assessment to identify the specific pollutants causing your reaction. Give us a call to schedule an inspection at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com.
