AC gurgling after flood, causing cough. DIY check or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our villa in Jumeirah has been making a weird gurgling sound ever since the flooding last week. My youngest son has developed a persistent cough and I’m worried there’s still water trapped in the ducts or something growing in there. Is this something I can check myself, or do I need to call a professional HVAC service to get it cleaned out?

Good afternoon. This is a very serious concern and you are right to be proactive, especially given your son's health. Based in Dubai, we see this exact scenario frequently after heavy rains and flooding.

The gurgling sound you're hearing is almost certainly trapped water that has not fully drained from the AC system's drip pan or drain lines. In the UAE's extreme heat and humidity, this standing water becomes a breeding ground for mold and bacteria within just 24-48 hours. The persistent cough is a classic symptom of exposure to these microbial contaminants, which are now being aerosolized and blown directly into your living space every time the AC turns on.

While you can visually check the main air handler for obvious standing water, a DIY approach is strongly discouraged. Disturbing the system without proper containment can exacerbate the problem, releasing a much larger concentration of spores. Furthermore, accessing and properly cleaning the extensive ductwork network requires specialized equipment like HEPA vacuums and antimicrobial foggers that are not available to the public.

For the health of your family and to prevent structural damage to the unit, this requires immediate professional intervention. Under Dubai Municipality regulations, proper remediation of flood-affected systems must follow strict protocols to ensure contaminants are removed, not just spread around.

I highly recommend you call our certified team for a full inspection and hygienization. We can assess the moisture levels, identify the microbial growth, and perform a complete clean using UAE-compliant methods.

Please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an emergency assessment. Do not run the system more than necessary until it has been inspected.
