AC mold causing my morning wheezing and chest tightness?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit for a couple of weeks and now there's black speckled mold growing along the wall behind the unit. I've been waking up with a tight chest and a wheeze that lasts for a few hours every morning. Is this definitely mold asthma, or could it be something else from the AC?

Based on your description, what you're experiencing is a classic presentation of mold-induced respiratory irritation, which can certainly trigger asthmatic symptoms like morning wheezing and chest tightness. The black speckled mold you see is likely Cladosporium or Stachybotrys (often called "black mold"), both common in AC leak scenarios here in the UAE. The high humidity, combined with stagnant water from the leak, creates a perfect breeding ground.

The AC unit itself could also be aerosolizing mold spores and other allergens (like dust mites or bacterial fragments) from its damp interior, blowing them directly into your breathing zone all night. This concentrated exposure while you sleep explains why your symptoms are most acute in the morning. While it strongly points to mold, only a professional inspection and possibly air quality testing can confirm the specific type and concentration of spores, which is crucial for proper remediation.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the mold without proper containment can cause a massive release of spores. According to UAE health and safety guidelines, this requires professional assessment.

You need two actions immediately: 1) Have a certified HVAC technician repair the leak and service the AC unit. 2) Contact a professional mold inspection company like ours. We can conduct a thorough assessment, including air and surface sampling, to identify the contaminant and create a remediation plan to safely remove it.
