AC mold in Dubai apartment: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been leaking a bit, and now I’ve found black speckled mold on the back of the wardrobe that’s against the wall. It’s a small patch, maybe the size of a dinner plate, and I'm worried the humidity has let it spread behind there. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and a mask, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai?

Good question. This is a very common issue in Dubai, especially in areas like JVC where humidity and AC condensation are constant battles. Here’s my professional assessment.
While the visible patch is dinner-plate-sized, the moisture from the AC leak has almost certainly migrated into the drywall and possibly the wardrobe's backing material. Bleach is a common but incorrect solution; it only bleaches the surface mold and does not kill the roots (hyphae) penetrating porous materials. It also poses significant respiratory risks in an enclosed space. Under Dubai Municipality and UAE health guidelines, any mold infestation covering more than 1 square meter (approx. 10 sq ft) typically mandates professional remediation. Your patch is likely under that threshold, but the hidden growth behind the unit is the critical unknown. DIY attempts often aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination to your AC system and other rooms. My strong recommendation is to get a professional inspection. We use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to assess the exact extent of the water damage and hidden mold behind walls without destructive testing. This tells us if remediation is truly needed or if the issue can be resolved by fixing the AC leak, improving ventilation, and a targeted hygienization process. For a case like this, where the source is an AC leak and hidden growth is suspected, calling a pro is the safest and most effective long-term solution for your health and property. We can properly contain the area, use HEPA filtration, and apply EPA-approved biocides that actually eliminate the mold, not just mask it. Feel free to reach out for a diagnostic assessment.
