AC mold in Jumeirah: DIY with bleach or call professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC unit in our bedroom in Jumeirah Village Circle has been leaking a bit onto the wall for a couple of months, and now we’re seeing these black specks spreading near the ceiling. We’ve been wiping it, but it keeps coming back and I’m worried it’s making my allergies worse. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and a scrub, or should I just call a professional cleaning company to deal with it properly?

Based on the symptoms you're describing in your JVC apartment, this is a classic case of AC-induced mold growth, and it's a very common issue here in Dubai due to our high humidity. The black specks are almost certainly mold, and the recurring moisture from the AC leak is providing the perfect environment for it to thrive.
Using bleach is a common DIY mistake. It might remove the surface discoloration temporarily, but it won't kill the roots (hyphae) penetrating the porous drywall. Worse, the water in the bleach can actually feed the mold deeper within the wall, causing it to return stronger. You're also risking exposure to harsh chemical fumes in your bedroom. The persistent leak and the fact it's affecting your allergies are major red flags. This isn't just a surface cleaning issue; the wall cavity behind is likely contaminated. In the UAE, especially in rented properties, addressing the source of the moisture is critical to prevent structural damage and health issues, which are a landlord's responsibility. For a proper resolution, you need a two-step professional approach: First, an AC technician must fix the leak at its source. Second, a mold remediation specialist, like us, needs to assess the extent of the damage inside the wall, contain the area to prevent spore spread, and use professional-grade antimicrobials to safely and permanently eradicate the colony. Given your allergy symptoms, I strongly recommend against DIY. For a proper inspection and quote to handle this safely, please give us a call at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com. We can determine the penetration depth and provide a certified solution. |
