Are allergens causing our symptoms?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be running a bit funny lately, making some strange noises that sound almost like it’s struggling. My son has had a persistent cough since last week, which sounds wet and he seems to have trouble breathing sometimes, especially at night when I hear wheezing. The whole family has been feeling more tired than usual, even though we’ve all been getting plenty of rest. Are there any common allergens or pollutants in the air here that could be causing these symptoms?

The symptoms described by your son and family indeed raise some serious concerns. The persistent cough, especially if it sounds wet and is accompanied by night-time wheezing, along with the overall feeling of fatigue despite adequate rest, could be linked to a variety of factors including allergens or pollutants in the air within your apartment.

In Dubai/UAE, indoor air quality can often be compromised due to several common issues. Firstly, the presence of mold spores is quite prevalent, especially during periods of high humidity. Given that Dubai does not have natural rainfall, the absence of moisture might seem like a mitigating factor; however, indoor condensation from air conditioners or other sources can create an ideal environment for mold growth.

Moreover, dust mites and pet dander are also frequent culprits in causing respiratory issues. These allergens thrive in warm and humid conditions which is why it's important to maintain proper humidity levels within your home. The use of dehumidifiers might be recommended if you don't already have one installed.

The noises coming from the AC could indicate a serious issue with the system, possibly involving refrigerant leaks or mechanical issues like compressor problems. Such issues can lead to improper cooling and potentially release harmful substances into the air, including refrigerants that are toxic in high concentrations. It is advised to get this checked by an HVAC specialist immediately.

In light of these potential risks, it would be prudent to conduct a thorough indoor air quality assessment. This should include testing for mold, humidity levels, particulate matter, and even volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which can emanate from various building materials or furniture.

Furthermore, considering the UAE's specific regulations regarding indoor environments, compliance with standards such as those set by the Ministry of Energy and Public Works might be relevant. Their guidelines on air quality in buildings are crucial to ensure a healthy living environment.

For these reasons, I strongly recommend contacting professional services for an inspection and remediation. You can reach out to companies like Saniservice at 800-MOLDS or email them at hello@saniservice.com if you need immediate assistance. Ignoring such symptoms could lead to more severe health issues down the line.

Remember, maintaining a healthy indoor environment is critical for your family's well-being in Dubai. Regular checks and proactive measures can significantly reduce the risks associated with poor air quality.
