Best way to clean mold from AC vent?« Back to Previous Page

The AC vent in our master bedroom in Jumeirah Park has been blowing out a weird, damp smell for the past couple of months. My husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose and itchy eyes every morning, and we're starting to worry it's mold. I can see some black specks around the edges of the vent when I look closely. What’s the most effective way to clean the AC unit and the ducts to get rid of this for good?

Based on your description, particularly the visible black specks and the allergy symptoms, you are almost certainly dealing with a mold contamination in your AC system. This is a very common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant AC use, which creates condensation—a perfect breeding ground for mold.

The most effective method is a multi-step process. First, turn the AC unit off at the circuit breaker for safety. Remove the vent cover and soak it in a solution of warm water and detergent, scrubbing it thoroughly. For the visible mold inside the duct opening, a HEPA vacuum is essential to capture spores instead of blowing them into the room. After vacuuming, the surfaces should be wiped with an EPA-approved antimicrobial cleaner. However, this only addresses the visible area at the vent. The smell indicates the contamination is likely deep within the ductwork and the AC evaporator coil itself, which is the real core of the problem.

A DIY clean is a temporary fix. Professional remediation is strongly recommended. We use truck-mounted HEPA vacuum systems to extract contamination from the entire duct network and apply specialized biocides and sealants that are approved for use in the UAE. This ensures the entire system is addressed, not just the visible part.

Given the health symptoms you're experiencing, I'd advise a professional inspection and cleaning. Call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive assessment. We can identify the full extent of the issue and provide a permanent solution to safeguard your family's health.
