Best way to permanently remove bathroom mold in humid Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom at our villa in Jumeirah has started turning black, especially in the corner by the shower. It’s been getting worse since the weather got really humid a couple of months ago, and I can't seem to scrub it away. I run the exhaust fan during showers, but it doesn't seem to be enough. What’s the most effective long-term solution to kill this mold and prevent it from coming back in our Dubai humidity?

Black grout in a humid bathroom is almost certainly mold, a common issue in Dubai due to the high ambient humidity and condensation from temperature shifts between AC and outdoor air. The most effective long-term solution requires addressing both the existing growth and the moisture source, as scrubbing surface stains rarely solves the problem.

For the existing mold, a professional-grade hydrogen peroxide or chlorine dioxide-based cleaner applied by a technician is more effective than store-bought bleach, as it can penetrate porous grout to kill the roots. The area must then be sealed with a quality, mold-resistant sealant to protect the porous surface.

Prevention is critical. Your exhaust fan may not be powerful enough for the room's volume; it should be verified to meet Dubai Civil Defence standards for adequate air exchange. Run it for at least 30 minutes after showering. Wiping down wet surfaces immediately and using a squeegee on shower walls removes the moisture mold needs. For persistent humidity issues, a standalone dehumidifier can help maintain levels below 60%, the threshold where mold struggles to grow.

If the staining is widespread, covers a large area (over 1 square meter), or has a musty odor, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use moisture meters to detect hidden dampness in walls and conduct air or surface sampling to identify the mold species, which is crucial for determining the correct remediation protocol and ensuring it is permanently removed.
