Black closet mold: DIY clean or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
My bedroom closet on the inside wall has started getting these black speckles, and my clothes have a damp feel to them. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it getting worse since the weather got really humid. I’m not sure if I can just clean it with vinegar or if this is a sign of a bigger problem with the AC or building that needs a professional. Should I try to handle this myself or call someone to check it out?

Based on the symptoms you've described—black speckles and a persistent damp feel on an interior wall—this is a classic presentation of a mold issue, and it's almost certainly being driven by the high ambient humidity we're experiencing. Given the location (a closet on an interior wall), the primary suspects are either a lack of adequate air circulation from your AC or a hidden condensation problem, possibly from a cold bridge in the building structure or even a small, concealed pipe leak.
While a vinegar solution can kill surface mold, it is a purely temporary fix that addresses the symptom, not the cause. The mold will return, often worse, because the moisture source remains. In the UAE's climate, improper DIY cleaning can actually aerosolize spores and spread the contamination. For any mold on porous materials like drywall or on your personal belongings, professional assessment is strongly advised. Dubai Municipality has specific guidelines for indoor environmental quality, and a certified inspector will use tools like moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact source of the moisture—be it an AC drain line issue, insufficient insulation, or a building envelope defect. They can then prescribe the correct remediation protocol, which often involves containment and professional-grade antimicrobials, not household products. Given the potential for property damage and health effects from continued exposure, I would recommend a professional inspection. Please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive assessment. We can determine if it's a simple fix or something that requires coordination with your building's management. |
